Unlike the second version, the latest one included rule

on the new science and technology innovation board, which will pilot the registration-based IPO system, according to Xinhua.

To accommodate the progress of reforms and development of the capital market, other modifications have also been made, cov

ering public issuance of securities, securities trading, and the protection of investors’ rights and interests, Xinhua said.

Dong expects the latest version to legitimize registration-based IPO systems not only

on the new board, but also across China’s whole A-share market. “Once the system achieves success on the n

ew board, it should be adopted on other submarkets as soon as possible,” Dong said.

President Xi Jinping announced in November that China will launch the S&T innovation board and pilot the registr

ation-based IPO system. Analysts expect the new board to begin trading around the middle of this year.

“The latest draft is expected to make comprehensive revisions, and it could go a long way

toward restoring public investors’ confidence and modernizing the regulation and governance of the ca

pital market,” said Liu Junhai, director of the Business Law Center at Renmin University of China.

The economy has stayed on the track of steady gro

owth. We have the confidence, conditions and capability to mee

t the projected targets for economic and social deve

lopment this year,” Yuan told an NDRC news conference on Thursday in Beijing.

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed China’s economy grew at a faster-than-e

xpected 6.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, remaining at the to

p end of the government’s projected growth range of 6 to 6.5 percent for this year.

The growth was unchanged from that in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Zhang Chenghui, former director at the finan

cial research institute of Development Research Center of the State Cou

ncil, said despite the downward growth pressure, China will see many positive factors in the economy this year.

Man arrested after incident in west London: British police

A man has been arrested after an incident in west London on Saturday morning. Police f

irearms and Taser were discharged, according to a latest statement released by Metropolitan Police.

According to the statement, police were called at around 8:30 am local time on Saturday, with reports o

f a car in collision with a number of parked vehicles near the Ukrainian Embassy in Holland Park, west London.

“As part of the protective security arrangements for London, armed and unarmed officers were

deployed to this incident,” said the statement, adding that “on arrival at the scene, a vehicle was driven at police officers.”

Police confirmed that firearms and Taser were discharged, the vehicle was stopped and a man in his 40s was arrested, not injured.

Andy Walker, chief superintendent in the Met’s Specialist Firearms Command, said: “as is st

andard procedure, an investigation is now ongoing into the discharge of a police firearm during this incident.”

Tu Liangcheng, one of the leading scientists of the Tia

nqin project, said that the project has been going smoothly.

“So far nearly 200 Chinese scientists from more than 30 dome

stic research institutions and universities and about 30 researchers from at l

east eight other countries-including Russia, Italy, Germany and France-have participated in the pr

oject,” said Tu, who is also director of the gravitation center at the Wuhan university.

Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, and a membe

r of the EHT team, said the success of the first black hole image has encouraged Chinese scientists to engage in mo

re international collaboration and boost the country’s ability in studying deep space.

Chinese scientists participated in Hawaii and Spain in the observations

that yielded the black hole image. They were highly involved in follow-up data analysis and th

eoretical explanation throughout the two years that followed the five-day observations in April 2017.

In 2016, the number of newly registered organ

donors exceeded 104,000 – more than three times the number for 2015, according to the center.

Last year, 6,302 people donated organs after death in China, an increase of 22 percent compared with 2017. About 20,200 tr

ansplant surgeries were completed last year, an increase of 21 percent compared with 2017, ranking the seco

nd in the world after the United States, according to the National Health Commission.

On average, 6.8 of every 1 million people donated organs after death or while alive for their relatives in Ch

ina last year, a record high, according to the China National Organ Donation and Transplantation Committee.

Guo Yanhong, deputy chief for medical administration and supervision at the National Hea

lth Commission, said that with an increasing number of organ transplant surgeries performed, Chinese phys

icians are also making progress in organ transplant technologies, and a number of world-class centers in trans

plant surgeries, covering major organs such as livers, kidneys, hearts and lungs, have been established in China.

The Congress members have also demanded that the US adm

inistration put into practice the Taiwan Travel Act and the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act, both passed last year, to fulfill its promise to the Tsai authorities. In their

letter to US President Donald Trump, some Congress members have said the Taiwan Relations Act will help mai

ntain peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and suppress Beijing’s so-called aggression.

Moreover, to seek the US’ protection and contain Beijing, the Tsai authorities have been hyping up

the island’s strategic value for Washington. But the fact is, the empty promises given by the Congress me

mbers cannot guarantee any safety to the Tsai authorities and, instead, could put them in danger.

Ahead of the 2020 elections on the island, some US Congress members are incitin

g the Tsai authorities to provoke disputes with the mainland by supporting those seeking “Taiwan ind

ependence”. But since any attempt to split Taiwan from the motherland would lead to a conflict, it will be in the interest of neith

er side of the Straits nor the US. Worse, such a conflict would destroy peace and stability in the entire Asia-Pacific region.

There were 215 million single people in China at the

end of 2017, accounting for about 16 percent of the population, ac

cording to the National Bureau of Statistics. Marriage registrations have fallen every year

since 2014, while the divorce rate has risen for 16 consecutive years, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Dining, traveling and pursuing activities individually have also become increasingly popular with singles in China.

Tang Chuan, a researcher with Sinolink Securities, said that without family burdens, singles

seem to be less inclined to save money, and their willingness to spend offers great potential for boosting the economy.

Sinolink Securities conducted research on singles born from 1985 to 1995 and found that about 40 percent of those in first- an

d second-tier cities live from paycheck to paycheck, while in lower-tier cities, the proportion is as high as 76 percent.

As part of the plan to build a “Beautiful China”, the count

y has vowed to increase its forest coverage to 26 percent by 2035.

To fulfill the target, Zhang said China should maintain the pace of afforestation – about 6.7 mil

lion hectares of trees newly planted each year – while implementing strict protection of forestry resources.

However, he said that the low survival rate of trees remains a challenge for afforestat

ion, and the administration is determined to tackle this problem in the coming years.

“To maintain a high survival rate, most of the effort should go toward keeping plants in a healthy state rather than simp

ly planting trees,” he said. “Also, species should be planted with the right techniques in inhospitable places.”

North Korea’s coal sales have historically been some of

the country’s most valuable exports. UN sanctions meant to punish Pyongyang for its 2017 missile

and nuclear tests put a cap on the amount of coal the country was allowed to sell internationally. The mea

sures also capped the amount of oil and energy products the country was allowed to import.

The report accused banks and insurance companies across the wor

ld of “unwittingly” facilitating and providing “coverage for vessels involved in ever-lar

ger… illegal ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum products, and an increasing number of ship-to-ship coal transfers.”

It added that North Korea “has attempted to supply small arms and light weapons and other military equipment to Hou

thi rebels in Yemen, as well as to Libya and the Sudan, via foreign intermediaries.”

North Korea has long sought the removal of UN sanctions and portrayed the measures as violations of its sovereignty.

The development comes on the heels of Thursday’s New York Time

that President Trump ordered Kelly to grant Kushner a top secret security clearance despite con

cerns raised by intelligence officials. The President has denied he had any role in Kushner receiving a clearance.

New York Times: Trump demanded Kushner get top-secret security clearance

The latest revelation also contradicts Ivanka Trump’s denial to ABC News three weeks ag

Several sources told CNN it is feasible that she was unaware of the red flags raised during h

er background check process, as well as the President’s involvement in it. According to a source fam

iliar with her process, she “did not seek, nor have, outside counsel involved in her process as no issues were ever rais

Kushner’s clearance was downgraded in February 2018 after Kel
